Green Suite Renovation

Through this renovation a small apartment comprised of tiny, dysfunctional rooms was transformed into an airy one bedroom unit with terrific flow and exceptional storage. (See also Rozel Apartment – Kitchen & Shelving for a similar renovation in the same building.)

Using simple details and keeping them consistent throughout the 450 square foot apartment contributed to a sense of enlarged space. High ceilings, transom windows between rooms, a single height floor throughout, and the use of barn-style sliding doors also played a part.

The end result is a 450 square foot apartment that includes an open concept living room/kitchen, generous bedroom, small but highly functional bathroom with a glass-walled walk-in shower, and laundry room. As well, it includes a remarkable 425 cubic feet of cabinetry and closets, most of which are recessed and flush with the walls for a streamlined, almost invisible effect.

Salt Spring Island Farmhouse

Complete kitchen and bathroom design and renovation for a client’s cooperatively run farm and home.

Priorities were efficient use of space, maximized storage, and a layout to accommodate large groups of people passing through and working in the kitchen. Custom cabinets in birch plywood with glass and metal fronts. Maple hardwood island top.

The kitchen’s low maintenance polished concrete counter featured a molded drainboard, while the bathroom included a concrete countertop inset with coloured glass collected by the client.

“If you are considering having Kari Szakacs do your renovations, beware. She did a spectacular bathroom and then a gorgeous lively and functional kitchen for me 10 years ago. Why beware? Well, it’s like this – I recently moved to another city and had to leave these great spaces that she created. Finding another place was tough. Kari spoiled me for anything ordinary. She rocks.”

Ryde Street Sinks & Counters

Kari Szkacs Designs Ryde St Counters

Included in this large-scale renovation were a number of polished concrete features. Those include counters and custom cast sinks in two sizes. White concrete with white aggregate, polished to high gloss. Counters sealed and protected with wax and sinks with a penetrating sealer leaving both smooth to the touch without a thick, resinous surface barrier.

Logan St Bathroom

This bathroom renovation focussed on maximizing storage. The shelving, cabinet fronts, drawers and the baseboards are all of Russian plywood. This creates continuity and visual flow in a small space.

We hired Kari to remodel our tiny bathroom. The result is  just gorgeous. It’s also a breeze to clean, and has given us double the storage capacity. Goodbye cluttered countertop. Hello efficiency! I would not hesitate to hire her again.
